Tucked into the wide green valley of west-central Idaho, the little town of Cambridge has welcomed travelers for more than a century. This guide takes its name from the Cambridge House — a beloved 1916 Craftsman home on First Street that has become a local landmark — and from that starting point it opens onto everything the surrounding country has to offer: the deepest river gorge in North America, an 84-mile rail-trail, alpine lakes, trout streams, and some of the friendliest small-town hospitality in the Mountain West.
We are an independent heritage and travel guide. We are not a booking service and we are not affiliated with any lodging business; our aim is simply to help you plan a memorable visit to Cambridge and the Hells Canyon region, and to keep the story of this historic house and town in good hands.
Why Cambridge, Idaho?
Cambridge sits in Washington County along U.S. Highway 95, roughly two hours north of Boise. It is the last real town before the highway climbs toward the Seven Devils and the rim of Hells Canyon, which makes it a natural basecamp. People come to raft and fish the Snake River, to ride the Weiser River Trail, to hunt the high country in autumn, to ski and snowmobile in winter, and — just as often — to slow down for a night or two in a place where the pace is set by the seasons rather than the clock.
The town itself is small enough to walk end to end, with a handful of cafes, a museum, a grocery, and streets shaded by tall old trees. For a fuller picture of the region, the state tourism office maintains an excellent overview at Visit Idaho.
A landmark with a story
The Cambridge House was built in 1916 as the residence of the town's country doctor. It is a textbook example of American Craftsman design — a deep, welcoming front porch, wide eaves, five bedrooms, thirty-seven windows, original hardwood floors, and a brick fireplace that still anchors the front room. After decades of quiet it was carefully restored, and today it remains one of Cambridge's best-loved buildings. You can read more about its architecture and the people who shaped it on our history page.
